About Baba Vanga
The Life of the
Nostradamus of the Balkans
Born in a small Macedonian village in 1911, Vangelia Pandeva Surcheva — known to the world simply as Baba Vanga — became one of the most enigmatic and documented psychic figures in modern history. Blinded by a devastating tornado at age 12, she described being carried aloft by the storm and emerging with a vision that would define the rest of her long life.
Vangelia Pandeva Surcheva entered the world on January 31, 1911, in Strumica — a town that was then part of the Ottoman Empire and is today located in North Macedonia. Her early childhood was marked by hardship: her mother died when she was young, her father fought in World War I, and the family struggled in poverty.
The event that transformed her life occurred in 1923, when a devastating tornado swept her into the air and deposited her in a field some distance away. When she was found, her eyes were filled with sand and dirt. The family, unable to afford proper medical treatment, watched as her sight deteriorated over the following months until she was completely blind.
Rather than retreat into helplessness, Vangelia — called "Vanga" by those who knew her — began displaying an extraordinary ability to perceive information that her physical senses could not access. She reported encounters with invisible beings who revealed information about missing people, the fate of soldiers at war, and events yet to unfold.
During World War II, her reputation grew explosively. Families of soldiers came from across the Balkans seeking word of their missing relatives. Vanga would describe their whereabouts, their condition, or — in many documented cases — the exact circumstances of their death, in details that were later confirmed. Bulgarian authorities investigated her abilities and found no evidence of fraud.
By the time of her death on August 11, 1996, Baba Vanga had received millions of visitors from world leaders to ordinary people seeking guidance. She had been studied by scientific teams, protected by the Bulgarian government, and documented by researchers whose findings remain contested — and compelling.
